How unlock time works
A digital game doesn't unlock when it's midnight where you live. It unlocks when it's midnight for the store your console account belongs to. Each PlayStation and Xbox country store runs on one clock, and the store's release timestamp is that country's midnight on release day.
We read those timestamps from the official store listings. For Grand Theft Auto VI, the PlayStation Store shows a release instant for 63 countries, and every one of them is exactly 00:00 on Thursday, November 19, 2026 in that store's own time zone. Rockstar confirms the date (on its Newswire, its game site and in Take-Two's earnings release), but it hasn't published unlock hours. The hours on this page come from the stores.
What decides your time is the country of your account, not your location and not your console clock. A US account in Seoul still unlocks at midnight Eastern. A Korean account on a trip to Los Angeles still unlocks at midnight in Seoul.
One clock per store: why the West Coast gets it at 9 PM
The US store uses Eastern time for the whole country. GTA 6 unlocks for US accounts at midnight Eastern on November 19, which is 05:00 UTC. In Los Angeles that's 9:00 PM on Wednesday, November 18. In Chicago it's 11 PM, in Denver and Phoenix 10 PM, in Anchorage 8 PM and in Honolulu 7 PM, all on Wednesday.
Other big countries work the same way. The Australian store follows Sydney, so Perth gets it at 9 PM on November 18. The Mexican store follows Mexico City, so Tijuana gets it at 10 PM on November 18. The Canadian store follows Toronto (midnight Eastern, like the US store). If you live in a country with several time zones, the table above shows your store's notes.
The US date change matters too. US daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026, so November 19 is on standard time: EST and PST, not EDT and PDT.
Fifteen windows over 19 hours
Because every store waits for its own midnight, the 63 PlayStation stores open in 15 separate windows. New Zealand is first, at 11:00 UTC on November 18 (midnight in Auckland). Australia follows two hours later, then Japan and Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, and so on west around the globe. Europe opens in three steps (EET, then CET, then the UK, Ireland, Iceland and Portugal). Mexico and Central America are last, at 06:00 UTC on November 19, 19 hours after New Zealand.
That is what the globe shows. Midnight is the middle of the night side of the Earth. As the Earth turns, the midnight line moves west from the date line, and each store unlocks as that line crosses its clock. Drag the time slider to watch it pass.
Three countries have no GTA 6 listing on the PlayStation Store as of October 10: Kuwait, Qatar and mainland China. The Philippine and Russian store pages redirect to the US store. For those, we don't show a time.
When preload starts
Rockstar says players who pre-order a digital copy can start pre-loading on November 12, and the PlayStation Store lists a "7-Day Pre-load". Neither gives an hour. Our reading is that preload opens at midnight in your store's time zone seven calendar days before unlock: 00:00 on November 12 in the store's clock. For a US account that's 9:00 PM PST on Wednesday, November 11. The date is official; the hour is our expectation, so it carries a dashed "Expected hour" badge.
We count seven calendar days in the store's own clock, not 7 × 24 hours, so a daylight saving change in between can never shift the answer by an hour.
PlayStation vs Xbox
We read the Xbox Store product page in 11 markets: the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Korea, Japan, India, Germany, the UK, Brazil and Mexico. In all 11 the Xbox timestamp is identical to the PlayStation one. For the other Xbox markets we show the PlayStation time with a dashed "Expected" badge, because we haven't read those pages ourselves.
Not every game works this way
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 follows the same pattern: Activision says the full game releases on October 23 at midnight local time, and the PlayStation Store listings we read agree (US accounts at midnight EDT, because US daylight time is still on in October).
Phantom Blade Zero is the opposite. Its PlayStation Store listing shows one instant for every country we checked: 02:00 UTC on October 29. That's 11:00 AM in Seoul and 7:00 PM on October 28 in Los Angeles. When a game unlocks globally, nobody gets it first, and this page says so.
If the date or the times change
Store timestamps can be edited by Sony, Microsoft or the publisher, and big games do slip. We re-read the PlayStation Store listings regularly until launch and update this page when anything changes. If a game is delayed, the countdown stops and the page says so instead of counting toward an old date. In the final week before launch, if our last check is more than three days old, the page tells you to confirm on your store page.
